Athletic Perfection Cheer & Tumbling Gym in Tracy closed its facility for business on Friday, March 13 due to COVID19. On Monday, March 16 the gym began offering virtual classes and team practices. “It was so important to us to stay connected with our athletes and to keep some normalcy in their life,” said co-owner Julie Van Os. “Our staff immediately came in, and we began making at-home instructional videos for our athletes and setting up various ways to connect with them virtually.”
For the last two weeks of March, participants enrolled in Athletic Perfection tumbling classes were emailed daily links to videos for their respective class. In addition, they were sent a video of a daily workout to do and a dance to learn. “We received so much positive feedback. It really kept us inspired to keep pushing through this, “ Van Os said. “Parents were so thankful and appreciative to have something for their kids to do and that their kids were staying active in the home.”
Beginning March 30, the gym switched to daily live classes held online. A weekly schedule is sent out and participants are allowed to take tumbling classes at their levels, participate in workouts and learn dance routines. Athletes log in at their designated time, and there are two instructors that coach them through the class. One coach is demonstrating, while the other is observing the athletes and making corrections. “We don’t have them do any tumbling skills, because they don’t have the equipment and space,” says Van Os. “We work on building the strength and doing drills that will help them do the skills when they get back into the gym. It’s actually nice to have time to focus on the little things that so many of them need help with.”
The gym has had the opportunity to focus more on character development during this time, too. “We have a word of the week we focus on. Last week was discipline and this week is positive. Really believe focusing on those can help these young kids get through this confusing time, “ says Van Os.
